My organisation, DayEight, has been working with the Salvation Army and Fairtrade Australia for sometime now. We have been looking at ways to encourage the large confectionery manufacturers to bite the bullet and go Fairtrade.
In recent weeks the Salvos and I met and it was mentioned in the meeting that “Cadbury is just refusing to budge, what more can we do to make them wake up and recognise their responsibilities to the poor”.
Well, it looks like our dreams have finally come true! Cadbury has recently announced an important first step into going fully fairtrade. As of Easter 2010 all Cadbury Dairy Milk will be certified fair trade. This is put simply, absolutely awesome!
The team at DayEight, along with the Salvos, are totally overjoyed at the move by this multinational company to engage with social and environmental issues.
Only the first step towards full social responsibility
It is important to note that this is only a small step in the right direction. Cadbury’s many hundreds of chocolate products, from its freddo frog fundraising products to its old gold blocks, remain non-Fairtrade. Because of this DayEight and the Salvos will keep working on ways to push Cadbury to stand up and behave responsibly when it comes to the worlds poor.
What can you do to help?
If you are out there wondering how you can help DayEight, the Salvation Army and Fairtrade to push companies to change the answer is simple. Please buy Fairtrade, and only Fairtrade, chocolate. As consumers we have power, and we can weild that power to push companies to become good socially responsible organisations.

Well done boys. Lets keep pushing them!
I really dont trust Cadbury. It sounds to me like greenwash. The fact they arnt going Fairtrade on all their products goes to show it is a marketing and PR stunt.
Yeah I agree, better not be a stunt. Good work with dayeight. Keep working these big boys.

Thanks for the comments everyone.
Mike, I agree that with a big company like Cadbury we have to remain skeptical. That is exactly why we must all pressure them, and other big corporates, with our wallets to do what we want. The power of young people is that we social network, and by doing so we can form large groups with real influence. We need to use this influence to make companies, and the world, better.
